The Worth of a Human Being

A boy working with his father in a hardware shop suddenly asked,
“Father, what is the value of a human being in this world?”

The father was surprised to hear such a deep question from a small child.

He replied, “Son, it’s very difficult to put a price on a human being—they are priceless.”

The boy asked, “Are all humans equally valuable and important?”

Father replied, “Yes, son.”

Still puzzled, the boy asked, “Then why are some people poor and some rich? Why are some respected more than others?”

The father stayed silent for a moment. Then he asked the boy to bring an iron rod from the storeroom.

Once the boy brought it, the father asked, “How much do you think this is worth?”

The boy replied, “Around 200 rupees.”

The father then asked, “If I make many small nails out of this rod, what would its value become?”

The boy thought for a moment and said, “Then it would be worth more—maybe around 1000 rupees.”

Father continued, “And if I make many tiny springs for watches from this same iron rod?”

The boy calculated for a bit and then excitedly said, “Then it would be worth a lot more!”

Smiling, the father said,
“Exactly! A person’s value doesn’t lie in what they are right now, but in what they can become.”

The boy understood the lesson.
