There once lived a sage who sat daily by the riverbank, loudly proclaiming,
“You shall get what you desire! You shall get what you desire!”
Many people passed by, but no one paid attention. Most thought he was crazy.
One day, a young man heard the sage’s voice and walked up to him.
He asked,
“Master, you say that anyone can get what they desire. Can you truly give me what I want?”
The sage smiled and replied,
“Yes, my son. I can give you what you seek—but only if you follow what I say. But first, tell me: what do you truly desire?”
The young man said,
“My only wish is to become a great diamond merchant.”
The sage said,
“No problem. I will give you one diamond and one pearl. With these, you will be able to create as many as you want.”
Saying this, the sage gently placed his hand on the young man’s palm and said,
*“My son, I now give you the world’s most precious diamond—people call it *Time. Hold it tightly and never let it slip away. With this, you can create as many diamonds as you wish.”**
As the young man was pondering this, the sage held his other palm and said,
*“And now, my son, I give you the world’s most priceless pearl—people call it *Patience. When your time doesn’t yield results, hold on to this pearl. Remember, one who possesses this can achieve anything in the world.”**
The young man took these words to heart and vowed to never waste his time again and to always act with patience.
He began working under a renowned diamond merchant and, through hard work and honesty, he eventually became one of the greatest diamond merchants himself.
