OLYMPIADS

Green Olympiad 2025 – A Gateway to Environmental Leadership

GREEN Olympiad, an initiative of TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), is one of the most respected school-based programmes on environmental education in India. Launched in 1999 as the country’s first environment quiz, it has since evolved into a comprehensive platform for sustainability learning and green skill development, establishing itself as a leading brand in environmental education.

Today, the Olympiad reaches nearly 2,000 schools every year in India and abroad, engaging students from Classes 4 to 12. Its core mission is to sensitize young learners, strengthen their understanding of critical environmental challenges, and build the skills needed to shape a sustainable future.

🌱 Relevance in Today’s Education

The importance of Olympiads has been highlighted in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes moving away from rote learning towards holistic development and 21st-century skills. The GREEN Olympiad directly supports this vision by fostering curiosity, analytical ability, and problem-solving in real-world contexts.

It also aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4, Target 7 (SDG 4.7), which calls for ensuring that all learners acquire knowledge and skills to promote sustainable development. This includes education on sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, peace, cultural diversity, and global citizenship—all of which resonate with the objectives of the Olympiad.

📘 Implementation Model

The GREEN Olympiad examination covers a broad range of environmental and sustainability-related themes:

  • Water, waste, energy, air, biodiversity
  • Climate change & global warming
  • Sustainable development & green skills
  • Culture & environmental values
  • Current affairs in sustainability

This year, the Olympiad also aims to converge with Mission LiFE, promoting the vision of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, to inspire sustainable lifestyles across the nation.
